Chad generally requires all travelers to present a valid passport for entry. Citizens of certain Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) member states may enter with a national ID card. However, travelers from most other countries will need a valid passport for entry into Chad.
All travelers entering Chad must present a valid passport. The visa requirements depend on the traveler’s nationality:
Citizens of CEMAC countries (such as Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Republic of Congo) can enter Chad without a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
Citizens of most other countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and European Union member states, must obtain a visa before traveling to Chad. A valid passport with at least six months of validity is required, and visas can be obtained at Chadian embassies or consulates.
It is recommended to confirm entry requirements with the nearest Chadian diplomatic mission before traveling, as regulations may change.
Chad does not have an extensive network of toll roads. The country's road infrastructure is generally underdeveloped, especially in rural areas. However, certain highways connecting major cities, such as N'Djamena and Moundou, may have tolls.
Chad experiences a hot desert climate in the north, transitioning to a more tropical climate in the south. The country has distinct wet and dry seasons.
The dry season is characterized by hot, dry weather, especially in the northern and central regions. Temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F) in the desert regions. The southern part of the country experiences slightly cooler weather, with average temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F).
The wet season is concentrated in the southern regions, bringing heavy rains and flooding. Rainfall is scarce in the northern desert regions. Temperatures in the wet season range from 23°C to 30°C (73°F to 86°F), with high humidity in the south.
The official currency of Chad is the Central African CFA Franc (XAF), commonly referred to as FCFA.
CFA franc banknotes are available in denominations of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 XAF. Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 XAF.
Currency exchange services are available in major cities such as N'Djamena. The Euro is widely accepted for exchange, and exchanging Euros for CFA francs is relatively straightforward.
Credit and debit cards are accepted in major hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers in N'Djamena, but cash is preferred in rural areas. ATMs are available in N'Djamena and other large towns.
